Victoria Mary Daaboul is just about the worst person on the face of the planet. I'm not being sarcastic. Seriously... She's mean, selfish, inconsiderate, and impolite. And she smells, too. She doesn't deserve to be an emu or eat carrots. |

So I went to a party tonight.
I didn't bring enough alcohol and cigarettes can only make up for so much when light. The music like the crowd was hit or miss. The host had bought twenty packages of glowsticks. To ensure they're not broken before bought they're put into long plastic wrappers. When the glowsticks grew tiresome I started banging on tables cups glasses Alex and Trevor with the wrappers. Alex grabbed two of his own and followed my lead. Trevor tried to hide it but must have been annoyed when the two of us were drumming on his head arms and soda can. Eventually he tried to walk away but we followed and kept the beat. We toured the house in single file. Trevor started to get into it and even started dancing. The different rooms gave our bizarre conga line bewildered looks. When we arrived in the dining room we found other things to drum on. Trevor grabbed plastic utensils and joined in. My wrappers kept breaking on the pot the host had supplied. Eventually I grabbed a metal spoon and kicked Alex off the metal garbage can to keep a loud bass rhythm. After several minutes of remote grins everyone joined in. It made the night. :) |

So I went to a party last night not knowing what to expect. I only knew two people who were going to be there for sure, though I thought I'd probably recognize a few more. As it turned out, a fairly good cross section of Dawsonites showed up.
One of the first to arrive was a girl whom I recognized from that whole Dawson-Against-War-in-Iraq thing. About 30 teachers and students were hanging around NewSchool making placards for an upcoming march. She wanted to write "Bush pays the media to censor his stupidity." Twirling her long blonde hair, she asked a nearby teacher how to spell "censor." Two minutes later, again twirling her hair, she asks how to spell "stupidity." The teacher's reaction was a combination of horror, depression, pity and sympathy. I had a hard time containing my laughter. She spelled a word wrong, nonetheless. Yesterday she asked if my band needed a backup vocalist. When I told her we don't even have a singer right now, she wanted the spot. She said she'd written songs before but doesn't play any instruments so they didn't go anywhere. The one line she could remember was something like "been around the world, seen so many faces." She listed only two musical influences, one of which was Shania Twain.
Evan Dubinsky, who trashed my band in the dawson newspaper ("Bob Dylan meets Socrates impersonating Jesus stuck in the body of Malcolm in the middle") and is currently hitting on an ex of mine, was there. He was wearing eyeliner for some reason. He reacted shyly when I confronted him, as if I had caught him off guard. Seeing him without his persona in full gear was amusing. I let him off the hook and we talked about the other bands. When I left he asked me to keep in touch and let him know about our next show. ...
His gaggle of "etc" girls was there. They sat around all night giving each other advice on the drama of a confused teenage sex-life. I recognized most of them, but the funniest one to run into was a girl about whom, as she passed us in Dawson, Alex said to me "hey look! It's Avril Lavigne." She turned around and screamed "I'M NOT AVRIL LAVIGNE!" I asked her about it and she remembered with an angry blush.
I met a girl taking women's studies at Concordia. She had braces, old-bleach-orange undercut hair, a nervous voice and shaky hands. She told me all about her lack of direction and complained about her own laziness.
At one point a bunch of guys got an entire room to start playing S&M-spin-the-bottle. I was in another room, but I wouldn't have partaken anyway. A very drunk guy stumbled in, proclaiming loudly that he'd just made out with a girl and two guys. He grabbed the phone from off the receiver and - without dialing - took it with him into the closet where he then fell asleep in the fetal position. That's when the party began to scare the hosts; one kept having to police her room so as not to have to wash her sheets, and the other sought refuge in hers. Around 4:30 they finally kicked out the people who weren't staying the night.
As usual, I got proper trashed, put people on the spot, and kept a smirk on my face the whole night. Ahhh parties! |

| show monday |
|

The show on monday went alright. bringing a drum set around with you is a pain, let me tell you... but, the new singer (with whom we'd jammed only twice before the show) suggested putting all the hardware and anything else we could fit into a hockey bag, which i happened to have, and that helped as much as it weighed.
The band on before us, carola duran ... ... well they sucked, but at least they knew it; their first song's most repeated line was "carola duran is not a good band." The band on after us played kid metal. their drummer was awesome, though. He used my kit, too, which was annoying. my kit looks badass on stage. :D
The band after them, Inveigh, were good at what they do, but I hate what they do. After them was Half, and they were awesome. Last was Bleeding Orange, who played our last show as well, but my ride was there so I couldn't see them. I dont mean to suggest that they're any good, but I left before their set last time, too, and would feel kind of bad when I'd see their bassist around school. Oh well. |

I saw Godspeed You! Black Emperor last night. It topped Radiohead and Tool for #1 on my list. The Rialto is a great venue, too, though a little far. It ended at 1:15 or so and thanks to coat check and slow moving friends we only got out around 1:30, at which time all but the night busses had stopped running. We took a night bus down parc and then trekked over to atwater to wait for the 356. In the shelter, this guy with a huge drop of coagulated blood right between his eyebrows started talking to us. He asked us if we wanted to smoke a joint and we declined, not knowing what to make of the situation.. he then asked if we'd just come from bible study, apparently dissapointed with our response. One of my friends went along with it and offered to sell him a bible. The guy then started talking about my friend's mom and bibles or something, and asked to see if he really had bibles in his bag. My friend opened his bag and pulled out a middle finger, but with a smile on his face. The tension for that split second was quite something... just how would he react? In the end, he took it well and started talking about jimmy page and alister crowley (if thats how you spell it.) He explained the blood on his face saying he'd walked into a blood donor clinic sign... ahhh how I wish I had something to record this guy. He was a character, if nothing else. |

Anyone interested in seeing my band play will have the opportunity on april 28th at cafe campus. It's a monday, but we're going on third (so not too late.) Most of the other bands are metal, so if you're into that then you'll enjoy them, but if not, come see us anyway! :) Tickets are 7$. The lineup is, in this order:
Bleeding Orange Carola Duran Eunoia Half Inveigh Minddrive
I have some to sell so if anyone wants any they can get them from me or any other member of the band if you know them. There will probably be some available at the door, but I dont know if they're any more expensive or not. :) |

A spider is crawling across my wall. There are always spiders here. I once reclined from the screen to see a spider descend from the ceiling a hair's breadth from my face. It hung at my nose for a moment, swaying gently with my breath, then ascended. I have never killed one, and I always shrug off complaints. |

mood: resigned & fatalistic music: Pink Floyd - Dogs

I suppose we all knew war was inevitable. Iraq was clearly on Bush's mind from the getgo, even before 9/11, not that the two are related anyway. Well, they are and they aren't; they're related only because one's being used as a bad excuse for the other. I read the most telling quote the other day in the independent:
Less than one month after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, Tony Blair permitted himself a rare flight of high rhetoric. "This is a moment to seize," he said. "The kaleidoscope has been shaken, the pieces are in flux, soon they will settle again. Before they do, let us reorder this world around us..."
It's too bad Chirac gave the states and Britain the excuse not to try at the UN; it would have been nice to see the US have to hand out billions in bribes and further cripple itself with debt only to have its resolution not pass or be vetoed by Russia China and France. It's also too bad that they didn't tar and feather Tony Blair the way I thought they might. Those were really the only consolations possible in this mess. At least Canada's not involved, but, then, how would we afford it if we wanted to?
This isn't going to go well. The invasion will probably go smoothly enough unless Iraq really does have chemical and biological weapons and manages to deploy them. America will roll into baghdad and the citizens will party in the street for 24 hours, the same way they would have had Saddam won, and then they'll take up sniper positions. The region is deeply anti-american (as well it should be) and it's also very violent. Iraq trained something like seven million citizens in the use of weaponry; the body bags will continue to fill for years.
Also, Saddam may have a few tricks up his sleeve yet. Knowing that America is out for his blood, he's going to fight like a cornered wolf. This will probably mean at least a bit of a scorched earth tactic, especially with respect to oil: I'm pretty sure he'll set his oil wells ablaze, which will hurt the US economically in the long term. The long-term financial damage that Bush is doing to America is probably the only upside of this mess. When Americans find their civil liberties rotting, (PATRIOT act and the second PATRIOT act on its way) when they find their already shitty social programs in even worse condition, (the washington school system having to cut 5 weeks for lack of funds, for instance; this is the wealthiest nation in the world and they cant even fund education properly?) when they find their only employment opportunities are at the mall flipping burgers or any other mcjob, and when a majority finally realizes their 'democracy' is and has been held hostage by big money for decades, maybe - just maybe - there will be meaningful social unrest.
The world needs a revolution.

mood: hungry music: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 09-15-00
|
As anyone who has read the comments for my last entry will have no doubt surmised, I'm in a band called Eunoia and we played a show friday at l'X. It was pretty cool. I wasn't half as nervous as I thought I would be; the whole thing didn't really hit me until the next day when I called the guitarist who said, in a shocked voice, "Dude... we played a show last night!" hah. Before and during the set, I had sort of suspended thought and just concentrated on whatever task was at hand. The most annoying part was when i dropped one of my brushes but recovered very well, pulling out another and not missing a beat, but then the one that i pulled out broke! I had one more i could have used but the song was almost over and i didnt want to bother so i just used a stick for the rest of the song. It probably sounded weird but no one seemed to have noticed. People seemed to like it, - people even yelled 'encore,' - which was good, but there were some problems with the sound and other stuff. I fucked up a couple fills, our keyboardist's keyboard somehow got transposed half an octave in the middle of our last song, nobody could really hear the singer, (she looked really pretty, though!) and the guitar was too low, but that got fixed half way through the set, thankfully. All in all it was fun and we even made 70$, which is not bad when you're only hoping to break even. Also my friend Phoebe made us shirts! they're nice. The other bands were good but not really to my tastes. Everyone that i met was cool, though. The entirety of subconscious cruelty wished me 'bonne chance' as they passed me in single file. After the show, the guitarists dad gave us carte blanche at this bar he frequents / (owns?). He's QUITE a character, let me tell you... Not so hot of a driver, though. That whole experience was a little surreal.
Anyhow, the next show will be in April at Cafe Campus for dawson's radio station. Be there or suck. =P
P.S. Why the fuck isn't godspeed playing in montreal? grr... |

mood: melancholy music: Bjork - Homogenic - Track 9
|
Although I'm kind of anxious for Bush to go in to iraq, guns blazing, for reasons I will not write out right now but probably will in the future, (they're nothing you've heard before, I assure you) I went to the Anti-War March yesterday and had a good time. It would contribute to my scenario to have the Canadian government condemn the war, anyway. I took many pictures. There was a couple carrying an American flag with multinational corporations' logos instead of stars. I took a picture of that, and funnily enough that couple and their flag made it into the Gazette (A3). I also really liked the Viacom addjam and took pictures of it (like everyone else.) When I get them developed, perhaps I'll post one or two. Another thing I liked was the route the march took; we passed the American Consulate and ended with a big rally right in front of a huge Canadian Government building.
Was it just me, though, or was there a very strong undercurrent of seperatism at the rally? I don't understand the point of carrying Quebec flags at an anti-war rally over Iraq, nor did I think that the woman who spoke's comments about being 'proud to live in the greatest city in the greatest province - soon to be the greatest country!' were at all appropriate. I'm not virulently federalist, but I just thought it out of context; go to a seperatist rally if that's what you want to discuss, don't hijack and anti-war rally. I didn't let it bother me terribly, but her comments and the crowd's subsequent cheers made me a little uncomfortable, and sort of alienated me from the spirit of the crowd. Others with a stronger conviction on the subject were probably left with an even more bitter taste in their mouths. Maybe it's not a big deal, but again, in my opinion it was not appropriate.
After that I spent just about the entire day alone with someone quite unexpected - hence 'melancholy.' *sigh*
I'm totally unprepared for school tomorrow. Blah. |

mood: content music: Phillip Glass - No. 3 Mishima (1957) - Kronos Quartet

1. I have become obsessed with online risk. 2. I have become obsessed with American politics. I read more chomsky ("911" and "Manufacturing Consent") when I was in the states over non-denominational-multi-cultural-winter-holiday, and have since rented Nixon, JFK and Apocalypse Now. Maybe my history teacher would be willing to do an independent study on American politics over the last century... he has a tremendous faith in learning but is constantly depressed because of his apathetic students; maybe he'd welcome the opportunity. But I digress... 3. I have become obsessed with the Kronos Quartet ... they rule. (thank you SoulSeek 4. I haven't become obsessed with it, but did anyone else know that St. Ambroise makes stout? Cool, huh? I've been obsessed with St. Ambroise for a while now. McAuslin and Unibroue are great; we have such excellent beer in quebec!
On a different note - though I'm likely to be obsessed with this stuff as well when the time comes around - I was given books for non-denominational-multi-cultural-winter-holiday: Chomsky's greatest hits album, "The Chomsky Reader," (dawson graduate) Steven Pinker's "How the Mind Works," and a collection of three Samuel Beckett novels, "Malloy," "Malone Dies," and "The Unnamable," all of which should be awesome.
Still on my list: a hardcover copy of Orwell's "1984" and/or "Animal Farm." :)
Lastly, happy non-denominational-multi-cultural-winter-holiday and new year to everyone! |

time once again for the mmqb. (thank you jack todd.)
I got back from the states two days ago... i took the train home. the distance between montreal and the place i left from is 410KM, and the tran station is an hour towards montreal from that spot. ... ... the train ride took 9.5 hours. fucking amtrack. ugh. That country is completely incapable of running any sort of buisness that isn't privatized... they're even privatizing their civil cervice jobs under bush... I really... no, really.... actually I dont think there even exists a word that properly expresses the depth of my hatred for that country; I spent the whole time I was there reading chomsky to offset the whole mindless right-wing attitude of the place. I could end up a bum on the street for the rest of my life and still be the happiest person alive if, during my lifetime, a revolution happened in America. America is the bane of humanity.
Top 3 worst things to ever happen to humanity:
1. Adam smith (it was a toss up between this and greed, but greed was given its definate formation by this man, which in turn lead to the unites states as it is today, which is why i chose adam smith instead of either greed or America.) 2. The bubonic plague (it did wipe out at least 2/5ths of europe's population in 1347-49... purely for humanitarian reasons) 3. The catholic church (this really shouldn't require an explination.)
